Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week: Luke Romano

Senior Luke Romano, number 73, is this week's Andy Heinz and The Westfield Legacy Agency's Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week. Romano is a senior captain for the Westfield High School boys football team and plays offensive and defensive line.

Romano began playing football in third grade through the Westfield Police Athletic League (PAL), coached by his father Rocco Romano and uncle Tony. He has learned about the game from his brother Max, who played football for Westfield High School. This marks his ninth season in tackle football.

According to Westfield High School head football coach Matthew Andzel, Romano is a returning all division player who anchors the lines. "He has put in a tremendous amount of work in the offseason to set himself up for a great senior year," Andzel said.

Romano's approach to football emphasizes daily improvement. "My approach to football is the mindset that every day is a blessing, and an opportunity to go onto the field and improve yourself," he said. "The key points to our season are going to be working hard in practice every day, and putting the team in a good position to get into the playoffs."

While his college plans remain undecided, Romano hopes to play football at the next level. "I have not decided on a college yet. I am hoping that as the season goes on, I will gain opportunities to be able to play football at the next level," he said.

Romano values his teammates and the bonds formed through practices. "What I enjoy the most in football is having the opportunity to be on the field with my teammates every day, and the fact that we are able to create a strong bond with each other due to having three hour long practices every day," he said.

Outside of football, Romano spends time with friends and family and enjoys golfing on weekends.
