Mountainside Rotary Marks 65 Years of "Service Above Self," Looks Toward Its Next Chapter

The Mountainside Rotary Club is marking its 65th anniversary this year, celebrating over six decades of community service since receiving its charter in 1961. The civic group's very first municipal initiative was constructing and donating the commuter bus stop shelter on Route 22 near Borough Hall.

Today, the organization's reach has expanded across multiple municipal resources. Union County Life found that the club regularly funds scholarships for local students, purchases equipment for the Mountainside Public Library, delivers assistance to first responders, and supports families experiencing food insecurity. In June, the group presented 1,000 dollar scholarships to Governor Livingston High School graduates Ashley Santos and Thomas DiNorscio, alongside youth service awards at Deerfield School.

A recent regional Rotary grant helped purchase hands-on tools for the Mountainside Public Library Maker's Cart, including a specialized cutting machine and a 3D pen. The club also coordinates regular winter coat drives, assists the Westfield Food Pantry, and prepares meals for the St. Joseph Social Service Center in Elizabeth. Club President Rose Sinisi noted that while the group is part of a worldwide service organization, the primary daily focus remains heavily rooted in the local community.
