St. Fanourios Church in Elizabeth Draws Faithful Across Tri-State Area for Annual Feast Day

St. Fanourios Church in Elizabeth became a regional beacon of faith on August 26, 2026, drawing pilgrims from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and beyond for the Great Festal Vespers honoring the Holy Great Martyr Fanourios.

Bishop Athenagoras of Nazianzos presided over the Vespers service, surrounded by clergy from the Metropolis. The deeply moving service included a traditional procession with the holy icon and the formal reading of the prayer for fanouropites (traditional St. Fanourios cakes).

A Message of Steadfast Faith

In his sermon, Bishop Athenagoras highlighted the life of St. Fanourios, describing him as a young soldier who endured torture for his faith.

"Just as he remained steadfast in his faith and was martyred for it, so too are we called to become witnesses to faith and love in our daily lives," Bishop Athenagoras said. "We must follow his example by facing life's difficulties with spiritual strength and hope, defending justice and truth even when doing so is difficult or unpopular, and helping our fellow human beings, demonstrating our faith through our actions."

Parish Council President Antonia Bletsaki spoke warmly about the impressive regional turnout. "Although our parish is small in terms of membership, it has good people who love the Church and give whatever they can to keep it open," she noted. "Faithful from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and elsewhere are coming to venerate the saint, bringing with them the traditional custom of the fanouropita. We invite everyone to visit and get to know our church firsthand."

Among the prominent pilgrims in attendance was Paulette Poulos, a Leadership 100 board member, who travels to the parish each year to fulfill a personal vow on the saint's feast day.

Community Spirit and Prayers for Healing

Following the Vespers service, the parish Philoptochos Society, led by President Evangelia Karadimou, hosted a reception with coffee and sweets for the faithful in the community hall.

The gathering was also marked by a solemn moment of solidarity. Speaking on behalf of all parishioners, Konstantinos Zempilas offered a public prayer for their parish priest, Fr. Vasilios Pipinos, who is currently hospitalized in critical condition.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with him during these difficult hours, in the hope that he will soon overcome this critical ordeal and return to his duties in good health," Zempilas shared.

The celebrations concluded the following morning on August 27, the official feast day of the saint, with a festal Divine Liturgy. The morning service included the traditional Artoklasia service and an additional blessing of the fanouropites brought by the faithful.
