Summit Boys Soccer Defeats Rahway in Season Opener, 2-1

Maria Torres · Union County Life

Summit boys soccer got off to a winning start, holding off Rahway 2-1 in a season opener that showed the Hilltoppers' early momentum on defense.

Senior Captain Maxim Kalinichenko opened the scoring with an assist from sophomore Alex Acuna Rascon, setting the tone for the match. Junior Cruz Romano added Summit's second goal with under a minute left in the first half, giving the team a commanding 2-0 lead heading into the break.

Coach Dan Jamnick highlighted the team's aggressive first-half approach. "We played hard for 80 minutes and pressed their defense, which resulted in two first half goals," Jamnick said.

Rahway pulled one back in the final 90 seconds of the match, but Summit's defense held firm for the rest of the game. Captain Teddy Mixon described the defensive effort plainly: "We played solid defense throughout the whole game and held them off until the last 90 seconds when Rahway scored."

Captain Andrew Seamone credited Kalinichenko's early goal with energizing the team. "Senior Captain Maxim Kalinichenko's first goal energized us and eventually led us to our 2nd goal by Junior Cruz Romano in the first half," Seamone said.

Despite the win, the Hilltoppers saw room for improvement. Captain Luke Cain noted the offensive possibilities. "We were making lots of chances offensively and definitely could have scored more goals," Cain said.

Coach Jamnick reflected on the season's beginning with measured optimism. "Great way to start the season. A solid win against a tough opponent. It's a long season, and we look to continue our success and improve each and every game," he said.

Summit's next two home matches are scheduled at Tatlock Field's Upper Turf. The Hilltoppers host Elizabeth on Tuesday at 4 p.m., then face Barringer High School on Friday.
