Clark Kindergarten Explores Apples Through Reading, Virtual Field Trip, and Taste Test

According to TAPinto's report.

Kindergartners at Valley Road Elementary School in Clark spent part of the fall learning about apples through an integrated curriculum that combined reading, observation, virtual exploration, and hands-on discovery. Mrs. Kimberly Nacht’s class read both fiction and nonfiction books about apples and learned the different parts of the fruit. Students examined real apples up close, looking at the skin and flesh and searching for seeds inside. The close observation helped them connect what they saw firsthand to what they had learned through reading.

The class took a virtual field trip to an apple orchard, learning where apples come from, how they grow, and how they make their way from the orchard to the supermarket. Students read The Apple Star Adventure, a story following a boy searching for a “little red house with no doors or windows” with a star inside.

Then came a debate. The kindergartners discussed whether the star inside the apple was real or created by the author. The class was nearly split down the middle. Mrs. Nacht settled the discussion by cutting open an apple during class, revealing a star-shaped pattern inside. The discovery sparked a new question from one student: “Can you find a star inside all colors of apples?”

The learning continued with a taste test. Students sampled red, yellow, and green apples, using words such as “sweet,” “sour,” and “crunchy” to describe what they tasted. They then graphed which variety they liked best, combining taste experience with data representation.

Mrs. Nacht reflected on the unit: “It was a fun week filled with lots of learning and even more excitement. The students loved getting to investigate real apples, make their own discoveries, and try something new during our taste test.” Union County Life has more Clark news and school updates.
