Cranford and Scotch Plains-Fanwood Boys Soccer Scoreless Draw

Maria Torres · Union County Life

Union County Life is reporting that Cranford and Scotch Plains-Fanwood played to a scoreless draw on Tuesday, Oct. 13, at Wexler Field in Scotch Plains. The game ended 0 to 0 after two overtime periods, in front of a packed crowd at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School.

The match was part of a boys and girls doubleheader between the two schools. The doubleheader raised money for Bosom Buddies, a local organization that supports families facing any type of cancer diagnosis.

The game was defined by defense. Physical play set the tone early, and both back lines gave the offenses little room to work. Cranford found its footing late in the first half with a good look that skipped just wide with under 15 minutes left. It then had a free kick from just outside the box that hit the crossbar. The Cougars could not finish either chance, and the teams went to halftime scoreless.

Scotch Plains-Fanwood gained momentum in the second half and put together several quality chances. Cranford’s defense held, and neither side broke through in regulation. The physicality and urgency grew through two overtime periods, but the score stayed at 0 to 0.

Cranford junior goalkeeper Henry Stein and Scotch Plains-Fanwood freshman goalkeeper Ewan Huerfano each finished with four saves.

The teams could meet again soon. Both squads received two-round byes in the Union County Tournament, with Cranford seeded No. 2 and Scotch Plains-Fanwood seeded No. 4. Both are scheduled to play in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, Oct. 20.
