Cranford Green Thumb Garden Club Marks 75 Years of Community Beautification
Maria Torres · Union County Life
For 75 years, the Green Thumb Garden Club has added color to Cranford, from riverbank azaleas to the Victorian style fountain at Post Office Plaza. Union County Life is marking the milestone with a look at the club’s history and current work. The club began in 1951 with 15 members as an offshoot of the Cranford Newcomers Club.
Mayor Kathleen Miller Prunty recognized the anniversary with a proclamation at the Sept. 1 Township Committee meeting. She called Green Thumb “a vital community organization” whose members have contributed “countless hours and funds to beautify our community.”
Cranford Chronicle archives show that Green Thumb members and Green Thumb Juniors competed in local flower shows during the club’s first decade. At a 1958 show, they won awards for floral arrangements and specimens that included asters, dahlias, roses, begonias, zinnias, and marigolds. By the 1960s, the club was taking on larger community projects. In 1962, members planted 213 azalea bushes along the Rahway River.
Over the years, the club helped restore the garden at the Crane-Phillips House, landscaped the Cranford Canoe Club, and contributed plantings at the municipal building, the police station, Centennial Avenue Pool, and other locations. According to the club’s website, it worked with a historical landscape architect in 1997 to develop a garden plan for the Crane-Phillips House. Members have maintained beds at the Cranford Canoe Club since 2007 and have planted seasonal displays around Monument Square and its memorial circle since 1990.
Downtown, the club helped design the landscaping at Post Office Plaza and donated the fountain that complements the downtown Victorian streetscape. In 2023, Green Thumb funded an automated irrigation system at Memorial Park on Springfield Avenue, where the club plants red, white, and blue flowers each year for Memorial Day. Since 2024, the club has also sponsored the Cranford Tree Canopy Project, which has distributed hundreds of native trees to residents. The club offers programs on native plants, pollinators, seed sowing, and other gardening topics.
Much of this work is supported by the club’s Holiday Boutique, which began in 1984 and is held on the first weekend in December. The sale features wreaths, arrangements, decorated boxwood trees, and gnomes made by members.
Barbara Wheatley, the club’s longest serving member, said the boutique has made it possible to keep planting in parks and township buildings and to donate to beautification and educational programs in Cranford. “As a member of GTGC for over 55 years, it is wonderful to see how our Holiday Boutique has afforded us the ability to continue to not only plant numerous parks and township buildings but be able to donate to beautification and educational programs in Cranford,” Wheatley said.
Past president Deb Murphy said the club held community events throughout the year to mark its 75th anniversary, along with a members’ celebration at Garlic Rose. Newly installed president Kathleen Murray said the club plans to continue its townwide beautification projects, educational programs, and lectures, as well as the Holiday Boutique.
“We look forward to another 75 years of Proudly Planting,” Murray said.
