Maria Torres · Union County Life
According to TAPinto's announcement.
Union County Life is reporting that three Elizabeth organizations will each receive $1,000 in special project grants from Union County. The county announced the awards on Oct. 18, 2026. The money supports local history projects that mark America’s 250th anniversary in 2026.
The Union County Board of County Commissioners, through the Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs, is awarding nearly $24,000 to 26 historic sites and organizations across the county. The awards are part of Commissioner Chairman Joseph C. Bodek’s initiative to celebrate the nation’s 250th anniversary.
Here is where the Elizabeth money goes.
The Elizabeth Public Library will use its $1,000 grant to restore the historic Red Lion Inn plaque.
First Presbyterian Church and Snyder Academy will receive $1,000 for “Black History Speaks.” The program features portrayals of historical figures. It is tied to Union County’s Four Centuries in a Weekend event, which was held on Oct. 17 and 18, 2026.
The Elizabeth Historical Society will use its $1,000 grant to produce a video titled “The Corner That History Made.”
Union County Commissioner Vice Chair Rebecca L. Williams, the board’s liaison to the Cultural and Heritage Programs Advisory Board, said the grants support preservation work. “Our local historical organizations put tremendous care into preserving the places, artifacts and stories that help us understand our past. These grants support that work in practical ways, from protecting artifacts to creating exhibits and programs that welcome new visitors.”
The grants will fund educational programs, historical exhibits, restoration projects, and living history demonstrations across the county. Williams added: “As we celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, we want residents to discover the many voices and experiences that are part of Union County’s history.”
