Fanwood Receives $1 Million Grant for New Fire Truck

Maria Torres · Union County Life

Fanwood has received a $1 million grant to help pay for a new fire truck for the Fanwood Volunteer FireDepartment. Union County Life reports that the award comes through the Union County Improvement Authority’s 2026 Capital Project Grant Program, which is distributing $10 million to Union County municipalities with no local match required.

The borough said the grant eases pressure on a tight municipal budget, allowing Fanwood to buy the equipment without placing an added burden on taxpayers. The program’s state funding was secured with support from Senate President Nicholas Scutari, who represents the 22nd legislative district that includes Fanwood.

Mayor Colleen Mahr said the grant is “an important investment in Fanwood’s public safety and the dedicated volunteers who serve our community.” She added that a new truck will help firefighters respond to emergencies and continue protecting residents.

Bibi Taylor, Ed.D., executive director of the Union County Improvement Authority, said the authority is helping municipalities across the county invest in infrastructure, public safety and community improvements. She thanked Scutari and the Union County Board of County Commissioners.

Fanwood Volunteer Fire Department Chief John Piccola said the funding will make a meaningful difference in the department’s ability to serve the community. The borough also noted that fire apparatus serves as a command center, a rescue hub and a lifeline on scene.
