Fanwood Train Station Restoration Moves Ahead
Robert Hargrove · Union County Life
According to the Borough of Fanwood's announcement.
One of the first floor windows at the town's 1874 train station is now off site for restoration.
The Borough of Fanwood says restoration work is continuing at the Fanwood Historic Train Station. Workers recently removed a first floor window so it can be restored in a workshop away from the site. The rest of the first floor windows will follow.
The lead architect is Fanwood resident Michael De Biasse of De Biasse & Seminara. The Borough named Paragon Restoration Corporation as the contractor.
The windows are only one part of the job. The plan also calls for repairing damaged wood, stripping several layers of old paint and fully repainting the outside of the building. Workers will also address minor structural concerns before they become larger problems, according to the Borough.
The station was built in 1874 in the Victorian Carpenter Gothic style, which was popular at the time, as part of the rail line from Westfield to Plainfield. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Borough says it is the oldest train station in Union County.
The station is at 214 North Avenue, according to a Borough resolution. That resolution covers exterior restoration of the building, which the document also calls the Fanwood Community House Train Station.
A $500,000 state grant supports the project. The Borough has said the grant was part of the FY2026 State Budget. An earlier Borough post also lists $15,000 from Union County for the work.
The Borough's update does not give a completion date, a total project cost or the contract amount. It also does not say whether the work affects commuters or use of the station. No contact was listed, so residents with questions can reach out to the Borough of Fanwood directly.
Once the first window comes back from the workshop, the remaining first floor windows are next in line.
