Franklin Elementary Celebrates Student Heritage and Cultural Roots

Maria Torres · Union County Life

According to TAPinto's report.

Fifth and sixth graders at Franklin Elementary School in Rahway are connecting with their cultural roots through a special Heritage Celebration project led by Mrs. Olivia Garcia de Cardenas. The initiative blends language learning, art, storytelling, and social studies to help students explore and honor their unique family histories and backgrounds.

The project centers on meaningful questions students practice in Spanish: "¿Cómo te llamas?" (What is your name?) and "¿De dónde es tu familia?" (Where is your family from?). Through these inquiries, students develop conversational Spanish skills and strengthen their inquiry abilities while thinking deeply about their own identities and origins.

The Heritage Celebration project unfolds in three meaningful parts. Each builds on students' personal and family experiences.

For Family Portraits, students create expressive artwork illustrating their families and ancestral roots. These visual creations capture not just who their families are, but the heritage and history they represent.

For Cultural Cuisine Stories, students write profiles of traditional family dishes. They explore why these foods hold a special place in their homes—the memories, stories, and cultural significance tied to recipes passed down through generations.

For Heritage Traditions, students write reflections and prepare presentations. They spotlight unique customs, holidays, and celebrations that have been passed down through their families. These traditions connect students to their past while allowing them to see what makes their families distinctive.

The project will culminate in a classroom display that brings all three components together. Families and community members will be able to see the students' artwork, stories, and cultural heritage projects in one celebration of Rahway's rich diversity.

"This project gives students space to see themselves and their families represented in school," said Mrs. Garcia de Cardenas. "When children feel that their heritage is valued and celebrated, they connect more deeply with learning."

The Heritage Celebration project reflects Franklin Elementary's commitment to culturally responsive education—teaching that honors student identities and builds community through shared celebration of diversity.
