Grover Cleveland 5th and 6th Graders Celebrate Cultural Heritage Through Language and Art
Maria Torres · Union County Life
Fifth and sixth grade students at Grover Cleveland Elementary School are celebrating their cultural backgrounds through a special project titled “Celebrating Our Heritage,” led by World Language teacher Mrs. Garcia. The project is part of Hispanic Heritage Month and combines language, art, and storytelling while encouraging students to appreciate the diverse backgrounds of their classmates.
In Mrs. Garcia’s classroom, students practice conversational Spanish by interviewing one another using questions such as “¿Cómo te llamas?” (What is your name?) and “¿De dónde es tu familia?” (Where is your family from?). These conversations provide students with opportunities to develop their language skills while learning more about their classmates and their families.
“By asking these questions, students aren’t just learning a new language; they are learning about each other’s lives, histories, and the beautiful diversity that makes our school so special,” Mrs. Garcia said. “It has been incredible to watch them light up with pride as they share where their families come from.”
Students are also creating family portraits that reflect their individual backgrounds and researching traditions that are meaningful to their families. These traditions may include holidays, celebrations, music, food, clothing, and special family gatherings. Through their research and presentations, students are sharing personal experiences while gaining a greater understanding of the cultures represented throughout the school.
The project will culminate in a “Heritage Gallery” in the school’s sixth-grade wing, where students’ family portraits, Spanish interviews, and cultural writing will be displayed. The gallery will provide an opportunity for students, staff, and families to learn about and appreciate the many cultures that make up the Grover Cleveland community.
The “Celebrating Our Heritage” project reflects Grover Cleveland School’s commitment to creating a welcoming environment where students can share their stories, celebrate their identities, and learn from one another.
