Linden 10th Ward Candidate Luis Fonseca Calls for Transparency and Responsible Growth
Maria Torres · Union County Life
According to TAP into Linden's post.
Voters in Linden’s 10th Ward will choose a council member in the Nov. 3 General Election. Union County Life is sharing answers from Luis Fonseca, a candidate for 10th Ward Council, as published in TAPinto Linden’s Meet the Candidates series. Candidates were asked the same four questions.
Fonseca is 29 years old and comes from a Portuguese and Spanish family. He grew up in a working class environment and has traveled and met people from around the world. He said he did not come through the traditional political pipeline. He built his path into politics while working in construction.
On local government, Fonseca said, “We live in a country where local government should be the closest, most responsive form of government people have. Yet too often, Linden City Hall feels distant from the people it is supposed to serve.”
He said he is running in the 10th Ward because Sunnyside deserves a representative who serves residents year round. “I’m running because I got tired of watching local government operate as though residents are spectators instead of the people paying the bill,” he said.
Fonseca called for stronger transparency, anti nepotism protections, greater scrutiny of appointments, and more public explanation before major financial or development decisions. He said he would explain major proposals in plain English before votes, including through short videos when useful, and would tell residents where he stands before he votes. “I’m not interested in becoming an automatic yes vote for the mayor, my party, or anybody else,” he said.
He said his loyalty would be to the residents of the 10th Ward. “My loyalty would be to the people of the 10th Ward. Not a party chair, not a political organization, and not City Hall.”
On development, Fonseca said, “My position is not anti-development. It is responsible development.” He said proposals should show the traffic, infrastructure, financial, and long-term impacts before a deal is done. He also said roads, sewers, drainage, parking, utilities and public safety must keep pace with growth.
Fonseca said he is skeptical of long-term payment-in-lieu-of-taxes agreements, known as PILOTs. He said that under New Jersey’s long-term tax exemption structure, school districts generally do not receive a direct share of the PILOT payment itself. He cited state oversight reports that say the school tax burden can be shifted elsewhere in the tax base.
He also proposed a simple system for residents to report problems and receive follow-up.
