Linden Police Offer Free Mental Health First Aid Training
Robert Hargrove · Union County Life
According to the City of Linden's announcement.
Residents who want to learn how to help someone facing a mental health or substance use problem can take a free, full day training course this fall.
Linden will hold Mental Health First Aid Training on Saturday, Nov. 21, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the John T. Gregorio Center, 330 Helen Street. Another session is set for Saturday, Dec. 5, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Linden Public Library, 31 East Henry Street.
The training is offered by Mayor Derek Armstead, the Mayor's Wellness Campaign, the Linden Police Department and the Linden Opioid Ad Hoc Committee. The city's announcement says the course is open to all.
The city explains that Mental Health First Aid "teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use disorders." It adds that the course gives people the skills to reach out, offer initial support to someone who may be developing a problem, and help connect that person to the appropriate care.
The city's flyer lists first responders, healthcare providers, employers and employees, community leaders and faith leaders among the people who should take the training, along with everyone else.
The training is free. Residents can sign up through the city's online registration form, which asks for your name, full address, email address, phone number and the session you want. The flyer also offers a QR code and the link tinyurl.com/mentalhealthlinden.
The announcement does not list a registration deadline, seat limit or minimum age. It also does not say who teaches the course, whether participants get a certificate, whether lunch or materials are provided, or what parking and accessibility are available at each site. For questions, contact Captain Abdul Williams at 908-474-4554.
Residents planning to attend either Saturday session can sign up now through the city's online form.
