Madison Elementary School Launches STEAM Learning and Cultural Collaboration
Maria Torres · Union County Life
Madison Elementary School in Rahway is engaging students across grade levels in hands-on learning experiences that blend science, creative design, and cultural exploration this fall.
In Mr. Harms’s 5th-grade classrooms, science lessons have moved outdoors. Students are exploring the movement of Earth and the principles of light by constructing shadows and tracking their size and shape changes over time. By observing how shadows lengthen and shift throughout the day, students gain a real-world understanding of solar positioning, measurement, and scientific tracking.
Mrs. Rubio’s school library has been transformed into a hub of active discovery with the launch of new Library Makerspace and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) stations. These spaces encourage students to tinker, build, design, and problem-solve independently, turning the library into an interactive laboratory for creative thinking.
Learning at Madison also bridges grade levels and cultures. In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, Ms. Wisniewski’s 4th-grade students and Ms. Millerick’s 1st-grade students teamed up on a cross-grade collaborative project. Working in pairs, older and younger students explored various Hispanic countries and traditions, sharing stories, art, and cultural facts. The initiative gave 4th graders leadership opportunities while offering 1st graders a welcoming environment to learn about global cultures and diverse backgrounds.
Mrs. Doris Jones, Principal at Madison Elementary, emphasized the school’s commitment to active and meaningful learning. “Whether our students are tracking the sun, building in the library makerspace, or learning about diverse cultures from one another, we are committed to making learning active and meaningful,” she said. “Seeing students of different ages work together and take ownership of their curiosity is what our school community is all about.”
