Mountainside Gets $365,000 for Emergency Operations Center
Maria Torres · Union County Life
According to TAPinto's report.
Union County Life is reporting that Mountainside will receive $365,000 for a dedicated emergency operations center. Congressman Tom Kean Jr. presented the funding on Thursday, Oct. 15.
The money will convert the second floor of the former Department of Public Works garage into space for coordinating emergency operations. The borough is moving forward with plans for the center, which is meant to strengthen Mountainside’s ability to respond to disasters and other emergencies that affect residents.
Kean said the center needs its own space because Borough Hall already houses the police department, senior center, recreation department, building and construction office, tax office, clerk’s office, and court. “I was pleased to fight for and deliver $365,000 for Mountainside so the emergency operations center can have a dedicated space, because every second matters in an emergency.”
The borough’s Office of Emergency Management handles storm flooding, relocating residents during power outages, and searching for missing persons. Police Chief Giannuzzi said the grant “will help us increase and enhance public safety in the community.” He added, “This funding will provide a very needed upgrade, and I’d like to thank Congressman Kean for everything he did to help us get it.”
Mayor Paul Mirabelli said the funding followed a long effort to secure support. “This was a long process, and we are grateful for his support throughout.” He said the funding “is a great step in helping to make sure we are able to keep our residents and community safe in case of emergencies.”
Borough Administrator Glenn Mortimer credited Debbie Varnerin with submitting the grant application in 2025. Mortimer thanked Kean for securing the funds.
According to the announcement, Kean has secured nearly $22 million for law enforcement in New Jersey’s Seventh Congressional District through the Community Project Funding process since taking office.
The announcement did not include a construction schedule or an opening date for the center.
