NJ Transit Midtown Direct Service Advisory: Portal Bridge Cutover Project

Maria Torres · Union County Life

NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ — NJ Transit and Amtrak are notifying riders of temporary changes to Midtown Direct service affecting major commuter rail lines through mid-November.

Beginning Sunday, October 11, all weekday Midtown Direct trains on the Morris & Essex Line, Gladstone Branch, and Montclair-Boonton Line are diverted to Hoboken instead of Penn Station New York. The disruption is part of the Portal Bridge Cutover project, which requires temporary modifications to rail service to complete critical safety work.

The service changes remain in place through Saturday, November 14. Regular schedules are expected to resume Sunday, November 15, subject to completion of safety testing.

According to the official announcement, those who have the flexibility to work remotely are strongly advised to do so during this period.

Union County Life is monitoring this transit disruption and its impact on area commuters. For real-time updates and detailed project information, riders should check the NJ Transit website at www.njtransit.com/portalcutover.

Weekend service on affected lines is not disrupted. Riders should plan accordingly and allow additional travel time for the Hoboken routing.
