Scotch Plains Acts of Kindness Time Capsule at Farmers Market
Maria Torres · Union County Life
Scotch Plains residents had a chance to start a new kind of community record on Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Scotch Plains Farmers Market. Union County Life reports that the township launched a time capsule project that asks residents to contribute 250 Acts of Kindness, from helping a neighbor to offering a smile.
Several officials supported the effort at the market. State Senator Jon Bramnick, Assemblywoman Linda Carter, Deputy Mayor Matt Adams, Councilman Roc White and Township Manager Margaret Heisey were on hand. Uncle Sam, played by Tom Strowe, also joined the event.
The project follows the June 26 opening of the township’s 1984 time capsule, which was buried during the township’s 300th anniversary. That capsule held commemorative T shirts, mugs, videotapes, local newspapers and photographs. It also held campaign buttons from the 1984 presidential election and a congratulatory letter from President Ronald Reagan.
The new acts will be placed inside the capsule, giving future generations a look at how residents supported one another and strengthened their community. The initiative also challenges the 2076 municipal administration to complete 300 Acts of Kindness and carry the tradition forward.
