Scotch Plains Library Friends Collect Jewelry for Nov. 7 Sale

A tangled necklace or a single earring sitting in a drawer could help pay for library programs this fall.

The Friends of the Scotch Plains Public Library are collecting donated jewelry through Wednesday, November 4, ahead of a Jewelry Sale on Saturday, November 7, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., the Township of Scotch Plains announced. Both take place at the Scotch Plains Public Library in Scotch Plains.

The Friends group is a volunteer run 501(c)(3) nonprofit that raises money for library programs, collections and community events. Union County Life is sharing the details so neighbors can clear out a jewelry box now and come back to shop a few days later.

The sale is one of two November events the Friends are holding at the library. The other is Book Bedazzle, a craft night on Thursday, November 12, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., where guests decorate the cover of a favorite book with rhinestones and gems, the Friends say.

According to the Township, proceeds from the Jewelry Sale directly support the programs and services offered by the Scotch Plains Public Library. The Friends say the money they raise helps fund library programs, materials and services all year.

Donations go to the circulation desk at the library during regular library hours. The Friends accept necklaces, earrings, bracelets, rings, brooches and pins, whether costume, vintage or fine. Broken pieces and single earrings are welcome too, since they still raise money for the library.

On sale day, the Friends plan a $1 bin and display pieces starting at $2, along with vintage and signed designer pieces. Venmo, PayPal and credit cards are accepted. Book Bedazzle costs $15 per person, is open to preteen through adult crafters, and requires registration because spots are limited.

Anyone with jewelry they no longer wear has until November 4 to give it a second life.
