Springfield Seeks Sewer Grant as Road Projects Pause

Maria Torres · Union County Life

According to TAPinto's announcement.

Springfield plans to seek a Community Development Block Grant for sanitary sewer improvements aimed at reducing inflow and infiltration problems. Union County Life is summarizing the plan, which Administrator John Bussiculo outlined for the Township Committee at its Oct. 13 meeting.

Bussiculo said the road projects the township traditionally funds through the grant program are not needed this year. Each year, the township applies for a set of street sections, which are South Springfield to Mountain and Oakland to Waverly. “Every year we apply for there’s a section of streets that we apply for,” Bussiculo said, “which are South Springfield to Mountain and Oakland to Waverly. Unfortunately, there’s no street this year that actually needs to be repaved.”

The sewer project would include cleaning and regrouting grates to keep clean water out of the sanitary sewer system. The township pays to treat water that enters the system, so the goal is to cut those unnecessary treatment costs. Bussiculo explained the reasoning: “The idea to keep the clean water out is because we actually pay it goes and gets treated, and we’re paying to clean water that actually is already clean.” He added, “So, we’re trying to stop that. So, that’s what the grant that we’ll be applying for will go to.”

The report does not give a grant amount, and it does not say when the township will submit the application or when a decision will come.
