Summit Sets Nov. 4 Hearing on $20 Resident Parking Permit Fee

According to City of Summit's announcement on September 22, 2026.

According to the City of Summit's Common Council agenda.

The permit Summit residents use to park in commuter lots and to drop off at the Transfer Station could cost twice as much next year.

Union County Life reports that the Summit Common Council scheduled an ordinance for introduction on Tuesday, Oct. 20, that would raise the Resident Parking and Disposal Permit fee. A public hearing is set for Wednesday, Nov. 4. If adopted, the new rates take effect Jan. 1, 2027.

The proposal comes from the city's Parking Services Agency. In a memo to Mayor Fagan and the council, Parking Services Director Nicole Sawicki asked to raise the resident permit from $10 to $20 and the senior permit from $5 to $10.

The fee has not changed since 2006. The memo points to the rising cost of maintaining the Transfer Station and the amenities it has added over the years. It says the increase will keep the station open to residents five days a week.

The permit does two jobs. Residents need it to park in Summit's long term municipal lots and garages, and they need it to use the Transfer Station. Anyone who relies on either service would pay the new rate once it takes effect.

The Transfer Station is at 40 New Providence Ave. Regular council meetings are held at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall, 512 Springfield Avenue. The agenda does not list a time or location for the Nov. 4 hearing.

The timing matters this fall. All current permits expire Oct. 31. Renewals for Nov. 1 through Oct. 31, 2027, are open now online at cityofsummit.org/permitrenewal. The senior rate is for residents 62 or older, and proof of age is required.

City documents do not say whether residents who renew this fall at $10 or $5 will owe the difference after Jan. 1. Contact the Parking Services Agency at 908-522-5100 or parking@cityofsummit.org. In person appointments are available Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The ordinance returns for its public hearing on Nov. 4. Until then, the current rates stand. Follow Union County Life for updates on this and other Summit government news.
