Free LIVESTRONG Program Supports Cancer Survivors in Union

Maria Torres · Union County Life

According to The Gateway Family YMCA's announcement.

The Gateway Family YMCA is now registering cancer survivors for LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA, a free, research-based wellness program designed to help participants build physical and emotional strength during and after cancer treatment.

LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA is held at The Gateway Family YMCA in Union, with sessions offered this fall. There is no cost to participate. The YMCA covers program expenses through its Financial Assistance program, supported by the Annual Campaign and grant funding.

The program brings cancer survivors together in a small community setting where they work with specially trained staff. Participants focus on building muscle mass and strength, increasing flexibility and endurance, and improving functional ability. Beyond physical benefits, the program emphasizes emotional well-being by creating a supportive space where people affected by cancer can connect and share experiences during treatment and recovery.

Dr. Ruth Rechis, Vice President of Programs at the LIVESTRONG® Foundation, explains the research foundation: "Research shows exercise is the simplest way for cancer survivors to reduce fatigue, improve their mood and bounce back from the debilitating effects of cancer treatment more quickly. But there weren't enough programs to help people affected by cancer reach their health and well-being goals, so LIVESTRONG® and the Y joined forces to create LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA."

LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA is a collaboration between YMCA of the USA and the LIVESTRONG® Foundation, a global leader supporting 32 million people living with cancer worldwide. Since its launch in 2008, the program has served thousands of cancer survivors across the country seeking evidence-based wellness support.

The Gateway Family YMCA, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit serving Eastern Union County and Northern Middlesex County since 1900, is committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
