According to the Westfield Board of Education's announcement.
Since September 2004, students at Westfield High School have known where to find Jill Mezzacappa. Her Spanish classroom door, her superintendent said, has always been open to anyone looking for help, guidance or encouragement.
That run is nearing its end. The Westfield Board of Education accepted Mezzacappa's retirement with regret at its Oct. 13 meeting, according to the board's agenda. Her first day of retirement will be July 1, 2027.
Superintendent Dr. Raymond González spoke about her at the meeting, before the board voted on the personnel items. He called her "a deeply valued member of the World Languages Department at Westfield High School since September 2004."
González said she is known for "her dedication to students, her collaborative spirit and the perspective she brings to her work." He added that she has taken great care to understand each student's academic, social and emotional needs.
Her love of the Spanish language and culture, he said, has sparked curiosity in her students. Among colleagues, she has been a trusted voice, always willing to share advice, lend support and "advocate for others."
Her life outside the building has its own story. González said Mezzacappa brings the same discipline and determination to fitness and recently competed in her first powerlifting competition. She is equally happy, he added, recharging somewhere warm and tropical.

As she enters retirement, González said, the district celebrates "a compassionate educator, a generous colleague" whose support of students and staff has strengthened the Westfield High School community.
