Westfield RideUC Shared Rides Are Free Through Nov. 20
Robert Hargrove · Union County Life
According to Union County's announcement.
Rides on RideUC, a new shared ride service around Westfield, are free through Friday, Nov. 20. The service runs on weekdays and can connect riders to Westfield Train Station.
Westfield is the first community in the county's one-year RideUC pilot, according to the town. RideUC vehicles began running around town on Tuesday, Oct. 20.
The service combines county funding with passenger fares. Via operates it under a contract approved by the Union County Board of County Commissioners and provides the vehicles, drivers, scheduling technology and customer service.
RideUC runs Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Riders book through the RideUC app on Android or by calling (908) 304-9138. The iOS app is coming soon, and iPhone users can book by phone in the meantime. Rides cannot be booked in advance, so riders should request one 15 to 20 minutes ahead.
Rides are shared and run corner to corner instead of door to door. The system assigns a "virtual bus stop," usually at a nearby corner, which may be a short walk away. Riders with accessibility needs are picked up at their door, and wheelchair accessible vehicles are available.
After Nov. 20, a ride costs $3, plus $1 for each additional passenger, up to four. The service is cashless and takes credit or debit cards, prepaid credit cards and Google Pay. Drivers do not accept tips.
Canceling more than five minutes after booking carries a $1.50 fee. Drivers wait two minutes after the pickup time, and riders who miss the ride may be charged a $1.50 no-show fee.
Riders must be 13 or older, and younger children can ride with a parent or guardian. RideUC does not supply car seats, but riders may bring and secure their own. Service animals are always welcome, and pets can ride in an airline-approved carrier.
"Union County continues to look for innovative ways to improve mobility, accessibility, and quality of life for our residents," said Union County Commissioner Chair Joseph C. Bodek. The county says the pilot is meant to help residents reach jobs, health care, shopping and existing public transit. Full details are on the RideUC rider page.
