Some of the trees growing on a Cranford college campus carry stories that reach back to George Washington. On Sunday, October 25, the man who manages them will explain how they got there.
Friends of Fairview will host a free Historic Tree Lecture from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 25, in the Fairview Cemetery Conference room at 1100 East Broad Street in Westfield. Union County Life readers who want a seat need to register first.
The speaker is Dr. Tom Ombrello, Senior Professor of Biology at Union College and project manager of the Union County Historic Tree Grove. Friends of Fairview is hosting the talk, which will include an illustrated presentation.
The grove sits on the Union College campus in Cranford. Approximately 75 historic trees grown from seeds and clonal cuttings are planted there. Their history spans from George Washington to 9/11.
Friends of Fairview describes the trees as witnesses to key moments in American history and a living link to the past. Dr. Ombrello will explain how the trees were selected, grown and planted on campus, and he will cover several standout trees in detail.
The lecture takes place indoors at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield, not at the grove in Cranford. It is expected to last about 90 minutes, and seating is limited.
The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required. Each person attending needs a separate registration through the Friends of Fairview registration page. Registration closes once the event is full, and no unregistered guests will be admitted.
The organizers did not share details on parking, accessibility or what to bring. For questions, call Fairview Cemetery at (908) 232-0781. An email contact and office hours were not listed.
For anyone who has walked past the grove in Cranford, this talk offers the story behind the trees.
