According to the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General's announcement.
New Jersey is reviewing the rules for when and how police officers may use force, and residents in Union County will get a chance to weigh in.
The New Jersey Office of the Attorney General will hold a listening session on Thursday, Nov. 12, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at New Hope Memorial Baptist Church, 91 Division St., in Elizabeth. It is one of three sessions around the state. The others are in Trenton on Nov. 10 and Pleasantville on Nov. 19.
Attorney General Jennifer Davenport is leading the review. By law, her office must review the Use of Force Policy every even year and revise it if needed. The office wants to hear from residents, religious leaders, civil rights groups, police officers, youth groups and victims' advocates.
Davenport said these regular reviews help make sure state standards line up with best practices. "We want to hear from the public as we consider whether the Use of Force Policy effectively protects both law enforcement and the community," she said.
The last review, in 2024, changed how officers handle people who barricade themselves, including people in a mental health or substance use crisis. Comments from this round will be considered as the state weighs possible changes.
Anyone who wants to attend, either to listen or to speak, is asked to preregister at njoag.gov/force-sessions. A Spanish version of the page is at njoag.gov/force-sessions-esp. You do not have to attend to be heard. The office is also taking feedback online at the same site.
The announcement does not list room capacity, parking, a cost or a deadline. It also does not say whether people who skip preregistering will be let in or whether childcare will be offered, and it lists no role for the City of Elizabeth or the Elizabeth Police Department. The announcement lists no public phone number or email for questions.
