New Jersey's yearly salute to towns that fight litter has wrapped up for another year.
The 21st Annual Clean Communities Fall Litter Summit and Awards Ceremony took place in October at The Mainland in Manahawkin. For residents of Elizabeth, the city has a contact for questions about local litter and recycling efforts.
The New Jersey Clean Communities Council hosted the summit with Ocean County Clean Communities. The Thursday program included a luncheon and the annual awards ceremony.
One of the honors is the Clean Communities Champion Award, which is reserved for members of the NJ Urban Mayors Association. The council says it goes to towns that show "a true commitment to fighting all facets of litter." Examples include citywide cleanups, crackdowns on illegal dumping, stronger social media campaigns and more enforcement.
The council's details do not name the 2026 award winners or say whether Elizabeth received a Champion Award. They also do not list which towns belong to the mayors association.
For questions about recycling or Clean Communities work in the city, contact Pat Vella, Municipal Recycling Coordinator, at 908-820-4154 or pvella@elizabethnj.org. Questions about the awards can go to the council at (609) 989-5900 or njccc@njclean.org.
The ceremony is held every year, and residents who want to support cleaner streets can start with a call to the city's recycling office.
