Springfield NJ Seeks Grant Funding for Free Senior Ride Program
Maria Torres · Union County Life
Springfield is seeking another round of Community Development Block Grant funding to keep its free transportation service for senior citizens running, according to a TAPinto Springfield report published October 27, 2026. Union County Life is sharing the update for residents who rely on the program.
Brendan O’Reilly, assistant director of Recreation in Springfield, said Union County has awarded about $13,000 a year in recent years. That money has helped pay driver salaries and transportation services for older residents. About 130 seniors use the program each year.
The service is free for all Springfield senior citizens. It runs Monday through Friday, and riders can reserve a ride up to two days in advance. Rides go to medical appointments, grocery stores, the post office, community activities, and other destinations.
The Recreation Department also takes seniors on monthly bus trips to farmers markets, malls, casinos, and theaters. O’Reilly said the township has several senior housing complexes. “It is essential that we provide this service to our senior population,” he said.
The report does not give the amount Springfield is requesting in this round, the application deadline, or the date of a council action.
