South Plainfield Wants Your Decorated Candle on Its Centennial Float
Patricia Chen · Union County Life
South Plainfield is marking its 100th Anniversary, and the Borough wants residents, businesses, and community groups to have a hand in the celebration. The Borough is inviting anyone to decorate a giant birthday candle that will become part of the Centennial Labor Day Parade float.
Each candle is 8 inches wide and 36 inches long and can be personalized with artwork, messages, and images. Blank candles are available for pickup at the Department of Public Works, 405 Spicer Avenue. Completed candles must be returned by August 26. After all candles are back, the Borough will add a decorative flame to each one.
Residents, clubs, organizations, places of worship, schools, and sports teams are all welcome to participate. For those who'd rather decorate with supplies on hand, the South Plainfield Public Library is hosting three crafting sessions. The first is Thursday, August 20, from 6 to 8 p.m. Two sessions follow on Thursday, August 27: one from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and another from 5 to 7 p.m. All supplies are provided at the library.
The finished float is designed to showcase the people, organizations, and businesses that have helped shape South Plainfield over the past 100 years. It will be part of the Centennial Labor Day Parade, a key event in marking the milestone year.
