City of Linden Announces Autumn Wellness Events for Seniors

Maria Torres · Union County Life

The Linden Department of Parks & Recreation has announced a series of autumn wellness events for seniors beginning in September, offering low-impact fitness, dance, and strength-training programs designed for older adults. The events are part of the city's participation in the Mayors Wellness Campaign, a national initiative encouraging municipal wellness programming across age groups.

Recreation Supervisor Megan Martin-Ortiz explained the program approach: "Mayors who make a commitment to the Mayors Wellness Campaign inspire their residents to live their healthiest lives. They lead campaigns to create innovative wellness initiatives for residents of all ages." The Linden program specifically targets senior wellness and community engagement through recreation programming.

Five distinct programs serve different fitness levels and interests. Project Healthy Bones focuses on balance and strength training with osteoporosis prevention emphasis. Zumba Gold offers lower-intensity dance moves targeting range of motion and coordination. Seat-ercise provides chair-based aerobics accessible to seniors with mobility limitations. Senior Citizen Line Dancing includes salsa and ballroom styles. Fit 4 Life rounds out the offerings with strength training and stretching exercises.

Union County Life covers Linden community programs, recreation events, and senior engagement across all 21 Union County municipalities.

Project Healthy Bones

Project Healthy Bones addresses osteoporosis prevention and fall risk reduction—significant health concerns for aging adults. The program emphasizes balance and strength training to maintain bone density and prevent falls. Balance and strength improvements reduce injury risk and support independence for seniors.

Zumba Gold

Zumba Gold adapts high-energy dance fitness to senior fitness levels. Lower-intensity moves focus on range of motion and coordination rather than high-impact aerobics. Dance-based fitness combines cardio benefit with enjoyment and social engagement. The program appeals to seniors seeking energetic activity without physical strain.

Seat-ercise

Seat-ercise brings aerobics to seniors with mobility limitations through chair-based exercises. The program eliminates standing requirement while providing cardiovascular benefit and muscular conditioning. Chair-based fitness enables seniors with arthritis, balance issues, or other physical limitations to participate.

Senior Citizen Line Dancing

Senior line dancing combines social activity with music and movement. The program includes salsa and ballroom dance styles, appealing to seniors interested in cultural dance forms and social connection. Dance brings together movement, music, and community in accessible format.

Fit 4 Life

Fit 4 Life focuses on strength training and stretching exercises, building muscular strength and flexibility. Strength training supports functional capacity—the ability to perform daily activities like climbing stairs, carrying groceries, and maintaining independence. Stretching maintains range of motion and prevents injury.

Program Customization and Participant Needs

Recreation Supervisor Martin-Ortiz emphasized that each event is customized based on fitness levels seniors may seek. The variety allows residents to choose activities matching their interests and physical abilities rather than one-size-fits-all programming.

Recreation Site Locations

Programs are held at two Linden recreation facilities:

John T. Gregorio Center: 330 Helen Street

Linden Multi-Purpose Center: 1025 John Street

Both locations provide accessible senior wellness programming throughout the city.

Registration and Participation

To register or for more information about program schedules, times, and costs, residents can call the Department of Parks & Recreation at (908) 474-8600. Staff can answer questions about program content, physical requirements, and participation details.

Mayors Wellness Campaign

The Mayors Wellness Campaign represents municipal commitment to community health. Cities participating in the campaign create wellness initiatives, programming, and advocacy supporting resident health across age groups. Linden's participation reflects mayoral leadership on public health and senior wellness.

Senior Wellness and Community Engagement

For Linden seniors, the fall wellness programs offer fitness, social engagement, and health-supporting activities. Community programming brings seniors together around shared interests in wellness, dance, and movement.
