Maria Torres · Union County Life

The community itinerary opens on Thursday, September 10, with Cranford’s 25th Annual Memorial Service honoring the victims of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The solemn service is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.

Two days later, on Saturday, September 12, the Cranford Jaycees will host a community blood drive at the Cranford Community Center to support regional medical needs. The weekend activities continue into Sunday, September 13, when the Friends of Fairview host their "Notables of Cranford Fairview Walking Tour" through the historic Fairview Cemetery. The specialized educational tour will guide participants through 15 distinct gravesites belonging to prominent individuals from the township's past.

Creative Workshops and Cinematic Highlights

On Monday, September 14, the Rahway River Fly Tyers Group will hold an open meeting where veteran anglers will teach participants the traditional art of how to tie a fly for fishing. Later in the week, the Cranford Theater will host a Comedy Open Mic and Audition Night on Wednesday, September 16, offering an open stage for anyone looking to try stand-up comedy.

The theater will follow up the comedy event on Saturday, September 19, by hosting the Passport to the Movies: International Film Series, featuring a special screening of the 1945 classic Rome, Open City, which details the final days of the Nazi occupation of the Italian capital. The venue's active late-summer film roster also currently features Tony, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie, Coyote vs. Acme, a 20th-anniversary screening of Cars, Don't Move, and Practical Magic 2.

School Infrastructure Milestones

The month concludes with a major celebration for the Cranford Public School District. On Saturday, September 26, local officials will hold a series of ribbon-cutting ceremonies to mark the formal opening of new kindergarten classroom expansions. The physical facility additions will debut concurrently at four township campuses: Walnut, Hillside, Bloomingdale, and Brookside schools. These weekly community updates are compiled regularly by Bernie Wagenblast of Cranford Radio.
