Springfield Route 22 Water Main Project Starts Sept. 8

Maria Torres · Union County Life

A two million dollar water infrastructure upgrade along U.S. Route 22 Eastbound in Springfield is scheduled to begin on or around September 8, 2026. The major utility project aims to modernize aging infrastructure to improve long-term service reliability for residential and business consumers.

The construction zone spans from Lawrence Road to the Rahway River crossing. Union County Life is tracking the multi-month project, which will replace slightly more than half a mile of outmoded six-inch cast-iron water mains that were originally installed in the 1940s.

Contractors will replace the legacy lines with upsized 12-inch and 16-inch ductile-iron piping. Beyond swapping out the primary main lines, utility crews are tasked with renewing connected customer service lines, municipal fire hydrants, and area water control valves. Project managers noted that expanding the pipe diameter will successfully increase total water flow volumes for local customers and emergency fire suppression operations. The highway construction is expected to continue through the fall season, weather permitting, and follows a separate 1.6 million dollar water infrastructure project recently finalized within the township.
