Westfield Residents Celebrate Unity Day Once More on Labor Day Weekend
Maria Torres · Union County Life
Westfield residents gathered at Windsor Park Playground on Windsor Avenue over Labor Day weekend to celebrate the annual Unity Day event. The neighborhood tradition, which first launched in 1991, has expanded over the decades to encompass a competitive basketball tournament, live music, school supply giveaways, and various community activities.
Co-organizer Kevin "Spud" Monroe established the gathering alongside Antwan "Twan" Clark and Steve "Stevie" Barden. Monroe explained that the tradition originally began as a lighthearted basketball challenge between local generations after he and his cousin finished playing professional basketball overseas. From that initial playground challenge, the event grew into a comprehensive public gathering designed to support local youth before the start of the school year.
Attendees enjoyed a wide variety of food throughout the day, with Robert "Hans" Clark and Steve "Stevie" Barden working the grill to serve burgers and hot dogs alongside pizza, bagels, cotton candy, and popcorn. DJ KeetieLow provided live musical entertainment for the crowd. Westfield Mayor Jeremy Berman attended the celebration to express municipal support, noting that the town is at its best when residents show up for each other across every neighborhood. Resident Louis Mercer highlighted the importance of the annual assembly, stating that the event provides a unique opportunity for families from all parts of Westfield to pause their separate schedules and unite for a common cause.
