Maria Torres · Union County Life
According to TAPinto's report.
The New Providence Pioneers play at Spotswood on Friday, Oct. 16, with kickoff at 7 p.m. The Pioneers are 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the Big Central Conference Patriot Silver Division. Union County Life is sharing the season update from TAPinto New Providence, which profiled first-year head coach Anthony Conzentino.
Conzentino said the team has improved each week, with players taking responsibility for mistakes and staying focused on the group’s success. Trust among players and coaches has been central to the progress, and building connection was a priority through the offseason. “They’re not concerned about their stats, they truly want to see each other succeed and get better,” he said.
He credited the senior class for setting the culture. “I have asked a lot of them and they have responded better than I could have asked. They have helped build the standard to the program I want to run and have set the perfect example for every future Pioneer that comes through these doors.”
Several players are making an impact. Marty Naujokas, a first year starter, has played on both defense and offense and has caught two touchdown passes. Will Hobbs has recorded 156 yards and two touchdowns, adding another option for opposing defenses to account for. Nate Mooney leads the team in tackles and has emerged as a vocal leader on defense. Aiden Griz, in his first season as a starter on the offensive line, has 2.5 sacks, 34 tackles, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.
The Pioneers host Gov. Livingston on Friday, Oct. 23, in the annual Mayor’s Cup Trophy game, with kickoff at 6:30 p.m. Conzentino said the team is focused on each game. “We had some games circled on the schedule this year, but we never look past any opponent. These next two games are equally as important and have to stay focused on our main goal.” That goal is a sectional championship. “The goal every season should always be to win a section title, that is what we are all focused on. One practice, one game at a time.”
