Summit Boys Soccer Tops Westfield in Overtime for 12th Straight Win

Summit boys soccer extended its winning streak to 12 games with a 2-1 overtime victory over Westfield on Tuesday. The win came on the road at Gary Kehler Field. Union County Life has the details from the game, which was reported by TAPinto Summit.

Westfield scored first. Ryan Gibbons put the home team ahead in the first half, assisted by Reean Dias, and Westfield led 1-0 at halftime. Cruz Romano tied the game at 1-1 early in the second half, and regulation ended with the score level.

Summit won it in overtime. Romano scored the winner about one minute into the extra period, and he finished the game with both of Summit’s goals. Jayden Torres and Teddy Mixon each recorded an assist. Joe Dadourian made seven saves in goal.

The win moves Summit to 13-1 overall and 4-1 in the Union County Conference’s Watchung Division. Westfield falls to 6-7-2 overall and 1-3-1 in the division. Westfield had won two straight games before Tuesday, including a 1-0 overtime win over Monroe, which was ranked No. 15 at the time. Gibbons scored the winner in that game.

It is Summit’s first win over Westfield since Sept. 18, 2021. Summit’s previous loss came 1-0 against Elizabeth on Sept. 8. Since then, seven of the 12 straight wins have come by one goal. Summit won 1-0 over Governor Livingston, Union and Hunterdon Central, and 2-1 over Chatham, Cranford and Scotch Plains-Fanwood.

Romano also scored two goals in Thursday’s 3-1 win over Glen Ridge. Torres assisted on all three goals in that game, and Angelo Bolanos scored the other one. Summit also beat Ridge 2-0 on Saturday.

Coach Dan Jamnik spoke about the Westfield game afterward. “Another tough game where we had to grind out a win, but we felt we deserved it, and we pushed ourselves. Now we focus on the next game and will continue to bring our fight.”

Summit visits Ridgewood on Saturday, Oct. 17, at noon.
