Young listeners and their families can hear a high school band play music from Disney and Pixar films at a free concert in Westfield on Monday, Nov. 9.
The Westfield High School Wind Ensemble will present its annual Children's Concert at 6 p.m. in the Edison Intermediate School Auditorium, 800 Rahway Avenue.
The Westfield Public Schools Visual and Performing Arts Department is presenting the concert. The district says it is designed especially for preschool and elementary aged children as an accessible introduction to live instrumental music.
This year's program features music from several Pixar films and Disney's "The Lion King," along with Paul Dukas' "The Sorcerer's Apprentice." It tells the story of a young apprentice who uses magic to do his chores, only to see things spiral out of control.
According to the district, pairing familiar movie soundtracks with classical repertoire aims to spark curiosity, inspire imagination and introduce young listeners to the variety of sounds a concert band can create.
The concert is part of a district effort "to foster an appreciation for music from an early age while strengthening connections between the district's youngest learners and its accomplished high school musicians."
The district says its Children's Concert initiative has earned national recognition from Music for All for its approach to music education and community engagement.
Admission is free, and families can reserve free tickets on the district's ticket page.
