Clark Finishes Restoration Work at Historic Robinson Plantation
Robert Hargrove · Union County Life
According to the Township of Clark's announcement.
A house built around 1690 has a new roof and a restored chimney.
Preservation work is complete at the Dr. William Robinson Plantation & Museum on Madison Hill Road in Clark. Crews replaced the building's wood shingle roof, restored its historic brick chimney and repaired its structural timber framing. The project also included other exterior work meant to protect and preserve the structure.
The work was done by Alden-Bailey Restoration. The township said the building's historic value called for specialized contractors with experience in historic preservation. That way, the work keeps the structure's original character and architectural integrity.
The Township of Clark received a $145,950 grant from the New Jersey Historic Trust in 2024 to support preservation planning and roof replacement. The full project cost $186,510. The township paid the rest.
The township describes the house as nearly 340 years old and one of Clark's oldest surviving historic landmarks. The township owns the property, and the Clark Historical Society runs it as a museum.
According to the township, the museum gives residents a look at the community's early history. The township said the restoration will help preserve this piece of Clark's history for future generations.
The announcement does not give museum hours, reopening or tour dates, or the dates the work started and finished. Residents with questions can call the Township of Clark at 732-388-3600, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
