Building Community

Maria Torres · Union County Life

On July 17, neighbors gathered in Roselle to serve neighbors. Bishop Reginald Atkins, Roselle Democratic Committee Chairman, partnered with Dr. Cynthia Atkins and volunteers from the New Destiny Community Development Corporation to distribute hundreds of bags of fresh fruit and vegetables, clothing items, boxes of diapers, and feminine care products to community members in need. Union County Life reports on the community service effort.

Four hundred thirty-seven people were reached through the evening's efforts to uplift Roselle.

"What if I told you tonight made a difference," Bishop Atkins wrote in a social media post reflecting on the event. "437 people will go to bed knowing someone they may never meet cared enough to show up for them. That's what happened today. No cameras chasing headlines. No politics. No fanfare. Just neighbors helping neighbors."

The Work of Service

Atkins recognized the volunteers and partners who made the distribution possible, viewing their contribution as deeper than the material goods exchanged. "This is what happens when ordinary people decide to do extraordinary things together," he wrote. "To every volunteer, every donor, every partner, and every person who gave their time… you didn't just hand someone a bag of groceries. You reminded them they matter."
