Roselle Hosts Third Annual Different Abilities Field Day
UCL Community Desk · Union County Life
On Wednesday morning, children from around Union County and Roselle participated in the third annual Different Abilities Field Day, hosted at Arminio Field. The event started with an all-inclusive lap around the track with everyone running or walking together. Roselle partnered with Inroads to Opportunities, a local nonprofit that works to empower people with disabilities in their pursuit of independence, with the organization holding up the Disability Pride flag during the opening ceremonies.
Roselle Director of Recreation D'Nean Wynn stated, "Different Abilities Field Day is an opportunity for us to celebrate and bring awareness to our population here of children and adults with disabilities. We engage in different activities on the field with them and have competitions that are available for anyone to do."
The field day was held in conjunction with Roselle's summer camp and featured an inflatable water slide, a golf simulator, flag football and soccer games, hula-hoop competitions, and giant Jenga and Dominoes. A Rita's Italian Ice truck offered free treats for participants, and popcorn was distributed at the end of the festivities.
Director Wynn emphasized the importance of inclusion: "It is important for us to create a space for our population of children and adults with disabilities that they can go out and have fun and participate in the same activities that people who do not have disabilities would participate in. It kind of lets the community know that Roselle is definitely making sure that our population with disabilities are part of the community. We made it our priority to include them into everything that we do here in town and also make a priority to make events specific to them." The event emphasized teamwork, acceptance, and fun as part of the borough's ongoing commitment to accessibility and inclusion.
