Free Senior Health and Fitness Open House at Elizabeth Y on Oct. 28
Maria Torres · Union County Life
According to The Gateway Family YMCA's announcement.
Older adults in Union County can swim, join an exercise class or get a health screening for free at the Y this week. The Gateway Family YMCA will host a free Community Open House on Wednesday, Oct. 28, at its branches in Elizabeth, Rahway and Union. This year's theme is "Move a Little. . . Live a Lot."
The open house marks the 33rd Annual National Senior Health & Fitness Day. Activities include swimming, group exercise, water exercise, Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring, health screenings and health information. All information and activities are free. For people who cannot easily get to the Y, a Virtual Open House will offer a schedule of group exercise programs on Zoom.
The Gateway Family YMCA, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is an official host site for the national day. It is hosting with Shaping Elizabeth, Shaping Union County and local community partners. Shaping Elizabeth, Shaping Rahway and Shaping Union are also sponsoring. The national event is organized by the Mature Market Resource Center, a clearinghouse for professionals who work with older adults.
"Older adults at all levels of physical fitness are encouraged to participate in National Senior Health & Fitness Day," said Patricia Henze, National Senior Health & Fitness Day program manager.
She added, "Our event goals are to increase awareness of the benefits of regular exercise, and to encourage all older adults to take advantage of the many health and fitness activities offered in their communities, as well as online."
Separate from the open house, the Y offers chronic disease programs open to the community. They include the Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring Program (BPSM), Group Lifestyle Balance Diabetes Program, Diabetes Management Program, LiveSTRONG at the YMCA and the Veterans Wellness Initiative. Register at www.tgfymca.org, call 908-349-9622 or email bpsm@tgfymca.org.
The announcement does not list open house hours, branch addresses, or whether visitors need to register or bring anything. It also does not explain how to get the Zoom schedule, which screenings are offered or whether there is an age minimum. Check www.tgfymca.org/events for branch schedules, or call the Y at 908-688-9622.
Shaping Eastern Union County, named in the announcement, works to improve the health of county residents through better nutrition and more physical activity.
