Unwanted prescriptions sitting in a medicine cabinet have a secure place to go this weekend.
The police department in Linden is encouraging residents to drop off unwanted, unused or expired prescription medications for National Take Back Day on Saturday, Oct. 24. The drop box is at Linden Police Headquarters, 301 N. Wood Ave.
The announcement came from the Linden Police Department and was shared by TAPinto Linden. Take Back Day is a nationwide effort led by law enforcement agencies. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration lists the national day as Oct. 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The DEA website lets people search by ZIP code or by city and state to find a collection site. It also keeps a separate list of year round disposal locations run by authorized collectors.
According to the DEA, the day is meant to give people a safe, convenient and responsible way to get rid of prescription drugs. It also aims to teach the public about the potential for medication abuse. TAPinto Linden says the effort works to prevent prescription drug abuse and accidental poisonings.
The Linden drop box is secure and open 24 hours a day, every day, according to the announcement. Residents can use it on Take Back Day or on any other day or night.
The announcement invites residents to bring unwanted, unused or expired prescription medications. It does not mention a cost or any need to register.
The announcement does not list staffed hours in Linden for Oct. 24 or say whether liquids and syringes are accepted. For the April 2026 Take Back Day, the department's alert said it could not take them. For questions, call the Linden Police Department at (908) 474-8500 or email crimetips@lpdnj.org.
Saturday puts a date on the cleanout. The drop box on Wood Avenue stays open after that, any time of day.
