According to Plainfield Public Schools' announcement.
The Plainfield High School Marching Band has come home from Baltimore with another big win.
For the second consecutive year, the Cardinals earned First Place Overall at the Morgan State University Homecoming Parade & Marching Band Competition in Baltimore, Maryland.
The band is directed by Gregory Williams, Director of Bands. “Music provides our students with opportunities to grow as performers, leaders, and scholars,” Williams said in the district announcement.
Plainfield was one of at least five high school marching bands invited to the university’s Homecoming festivities, the district said. Bands came from New Jersey, Maryland and other states in the region. The competition tested musical performance, marching precision, showmanship and overall execution.
The weekend also gave students a look at college life. Band members connected with Plainfield alumni who attend Morgan State and spent time with members and leaders of the university’s Magnificent Marching Machine. They also learned about academic programs, scholarships, campus life and chances to keep performing in college.
Board President Hanae M. Wyatt, a Morgan State University alumna, said the win carried special meaning for her. “I know the talent our students possess, and this victory is a powerful reminder of why we must continue investing in them, advocating for them, and creating opportunities for the world to see what we see right here in Plainfield.”
Interim Superintendent Dr. Elizabeth Filippatos praised the students and the staff behind them. “We see you marching in the rain, playing in the cold, and never missing a beat. Your dedication to our students does not go unnoticed.”
The district did not share the competition date, scores or the names of the other bands. Questions about the band or this story can go to the district’s Office of Marketing and Communications at information@plainfield.k12.nj.us or (908) 731-4442.
